Services That Can Help Family Caregivers Maintain Life Balance

providing care for aging parents - services that can help family caregivers in atlanta maintain balance

A majority of caregivers who are providing care for aging parents in this country are non-professional family members.

Providing care for aging parents or other loved ones who cannot care for themselves is time-consuming and exhausting.

Caregivers for aging parents and others often neglect their own well-being. This is a serious and growing issue. Families should support caregivers in maintaining balance and self-care. When caregivers stay healthy, they provide better care.

Many programs offer support. These include financial assistance, respite care, and adult day services. Taking advantage of these resources can make a meaningful difference.

Since 1997, November has been recognized as National Family Caregivers Month. In recent years, caregiving demands have increased, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Leaders and organizations continue to highlight the need for stronger support systems for caregivers.

Excerpt From President Biden’s Proclamation

Every day, millions of Americans care for loved ones. They provide essential support and medical assistance. Their compassion helps family members live with dignity. This role became even more critical during the COVID-19 pandemic. During National Family Caregivers Month, we recognize and thank caregivers for their vital contributions.

Caregiving can be meaningful, but it often requires sacrifice. Many people adjust careers or leave jobs to care for family members. This creates financial strain for families and impacts the broader economy. Many also struggle with the high cost of care for aging relatives or individuals with disabilities.

Efforts continue to support caregivers and reduce these burdens. Programs provide funding and services such as counseling, respite care, and training. Expanded support for home- and community-based services also helps families care for loved ones more effectively.

Overview Of Governmental And Community Programs For Family Caregivers

More than 400 programs offer financial assistance for elder care. Support comes from federal, state, and local governments, the Department of Veterans Affairs, nonprofits, and private organizations. Dozens of agencies may provide help.

However, finding the right program can be difficult. Each source has different and sometimes conflicting eligibility rules. Determining what you qualify for often takes time and careful review.

There’s a quick questionnaire at this link that will give you a sense of which programs you and your loved one are eligible for: https://www.payingforseniorcare.com/resources/locator_tool

You May Even Be Able To Get Paid For Your Caregiving Services

Though NOT allowed in Georgia, in most states, it is possible for family members to be paid by Medicaid for providing personal care for their loved ones. In brief, this process works as follows.

1) An individual applies for Medicaid
2) Once approved, they then sign-up for a specific Medicaid program that pays for home care and allows for “Consumer Direction”. Consumer Direction, also called self-directed care, means the beneficiary can select their care providers rather than have Medicaid choose providers on their behalf.
3) The beneficiary then hires their family member as a personal caregiver.
4) The family member/caregiver submits timesheets to Medicaid. They are paid by Medicaid or indirectly by a legally responsible third-party service.

Veteran Administration’s Community Care Network (VA-CCN)

Another source of help is through the Veteran’s Administration. If you are a family caregiver for a loved one who served in any branch of the military and had an honorable discharge, you may be entitled to additional assistance through the VA Community Care Network (CCN). Please Take Care Of Yourself

If you are a caregiver, please tend to your self-care. Ask for help from other and especially ask for help looking into the programs that may be able to provide much-needed assistance and respite. And, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for all that you do.
