The Estate & Asset Protection Law Firm Owner, Shannon Pawley, Encourages Parents To Consider Creating Legal Documents Before Sending Kids Off To College.

Estate & Asset Protection Law Firm Owner, Shannon Pawley, writes about how many parents find out the hard way that they have no say in their child’s healthcare and even their college records without legal documents that entitle them to information if their child is 18 and older.

DECATUR, GA, July 25, 2022: Shannon Pawley, Owner of The Estate & Asset Protection Law Firm, has posted a new article on the law firm’s website entitled “Pack Your Kids Off To College With Estate Planning Documents,” in which Ms. Pawley outlines the importance of putting legal documents in place for 18-year-old college bound kids.

Right away Pawley acknowledges, “I know estate planning is not exactly the first thing any parent thinks about when kids head off to college for the first time.” She continues, “But it should be high on the list of priorities if your kid is 18 or older.” Pawley explain, “If you’re wondering why, it’s because if something were to happen to your child, for instance if they got ill or were in an accident, you would not be entitled to participate in their health treatment. As an 18-year-old, your child is considered an adult and must give consent, not only for health care decisions, but for a variety of things.”

According to Pawley, “Too many parents learn the hard way about the privacy afforded their college kids once they turn 18. Typically,” she explains, “the college can prevent parents from receiving any information from the school without your child’s consent. So, be sure to speak with your family attorney if you have a child heading to college this fall. Ask about the documents I’m highlighting below.” Pawley states, “Learning the hard way is never the way most of us would choose to learn life’s lessons. And this is one lesson that is not necessary for parents to learn the hard way. A little pre-planning can eliminate many misunderstandings and heartaches.”

Among the documents Pawley highlights are a Will, Durable Power of Attorney for Healthcare and Healthcare Directive, HIPPAA Authorization and more.
