Perplexing COVID-19 Pandemic Turning School Days Into School Daze
With schools in some parts of the country already opening up amid COVID-19 pandemic threats, I believe everyone from parents, students, teachers and government officials are feeling bewildered at how to proceed.
I can only speak from my own experience as so many thoughts – many conflicting — spring to mind as I think about sending my kids back to school.
For starters, I think it’s good for kids to go back to school from a mental health standpoint. Not just for the kids, but also for the parents. With COVID-19 being the threat that it still is, both the school and the kids are going to have to be diligent in maintaining safety.
Knowing how kids – especially little ones – love to share snacks and lunches, training is going to have to begin at home in terms of what can no longer be part of their regular behaviors. No doubt, going back to school this year is going to be fraught with a host of new anxieties.
One of the biggest dilemmas about returning students to school in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, is actually getting kids to school.
According to the New York Times, about 50% of American students are picked up by the school bus: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/07/29/us/schools-reopening-coronavirus.html
That may no longer be an option and is just one of a host of problems facing educators and school superintendents throughout the country. Many children may be going home to grandparents or senior caregivers after school which will require an extra level of precaution and diligence.
The COVID-19 pandemic back-to-school challenges are truly bewildering. The dangers are real and not everyone will be in agreement. Safety is the most important aspect of the 2020 school year. Everyone has so much to learn living with this pandemic.
I pray that even though the adults making important decisions about how our children will continue to be educated during this stressful time, that safety is the number one priority. We are social creatures, and attending school is important not just for what is learned through books, but also through interactions with others. We are also very adaptable beings and I know we will get through this with everyone doing their very best.
