The Pension Benefit For Wartime Veterans

pension benefit for wartime veterans info from elder law attorney

If you or your spouse were veterans who served during any wartime period – prior to 1980 for even one day, and after 1980 if you served for at least two years – you may be eligible to apply The Pension. The Pension provides tax-free income to wartime veterans, whether you were in combat or not, that can be used to offset medical costs.

One reason many veterans do not apply for this benefit is that, because of the name, they mistakenly think that one must retire from the military in order to qualify. That is not the case. The Pension is a benefit that is available to any wartime veteran meeting the length of service requirement. It is specifically meant for use if the veteran needs home health care, assisted living or nursing home care.

While there is no statute of limitation, The Pension is one of the lesser known of the VA benefits. It does have income and asset requirements that must be met in order to qualify. And the veteran must actually apply for the benefit. It is not automatic.

As with any kind of benefit, you never know if you are going to need to take advantage of it or not. And, it is for that reason that I encourage veterans to apply for benefits while they don’t need them so that in the event they do the process is already in place. You simply don’t know what the future holds, when you might take a tumble or need a new hip.

In addition, it makes sense for every veteran, wartime or not, to enroll in the Health Care System of the VA. Prescriptions are a fraction of the cost, as are hearing aids and veterans have access to a host of assisted at-home services.
